We elaborate on a few of these guidelines below.

There are countless products that exist to make life easier for braces wearers. Find a toothbrush and flossing aid that you love and that work well. Add a mouthwash to your regimen to help keep your teeth and gums healthy during your time in braces. Because it’s easier for food particles and bacteria to be trapped in braces, you want to ensure that getting them off reveals healthy, decay-free teeth. Simplifying your oral hygiene will help you look forward to twice-daily cleaning.

If you have a loose/poking wire or bracket, schedule a checkup so we can remedy the problem. In the interim, carefully use the back of a spoon or a pencil eraser to push the wire into place. Cover the offending spot with wax or cotton to soothe your cheeks. If anything comes loose from your braces, save the piece and bring it to the office.

Dealing with Sore Teeth

When we say that you should anticipate how your braces will make you feel, we mean that you should prepare for post-appointment discomfort. After we change your wires, your teeth will feel stiff and tight for 1-2 days. Relieve the pain with a salt water mouthwash (1 tsp salt in 8 oz lukewarm water). Swish the salt water for a couple minutes and then spit it out; it will help reduce swelling and soothe your soft tissues. Over the counter pain relievers can also be taken if necessary. Eat soft foods that won’t get stuck in your braces, like applesauce, yogurt, and mashed potatoes.

Types of Foods to Avoid

We’re not going to burden you with a long list. That’s hard to remember, especially when you’re facing a craving and wondering, will this damage my orthodontia? Instead, group no-can-do’s into a few broad categories. If the snack you’re staring down is at home in any of these groups, it’s best to choose another treat.

Hard foods – Ice, candy, popcorn
Tough, chewy foods – Steak, ribs, crusty bread
Sticky foods – Gum, taffy, caramel
Anything you bite into with your front teeth – Hard rolls, whole fruit

Chewy foods and snacks you typically bite into with your front teeth can often still be eaten – just make sure that you prepare them properly. Cut up apples, carrots and celery; cut sandwiches into bites; remove meat from the bone; and cut corn off the cob.
