Am I A Candidate for Clear Braces?
“Clear braces” is a catchall term for a few different types of orthodontic treatment. Technically, any treatment can be labelled “alternative” when it differs from traditional metal braces. And most of these alternative options involve clear orthodontics, since appearance is one of the biggest drawbacks of metal braces (especially for adult patients). You may qualify for one type of clear braces, or metal braces may be necessary to ensure successful results.
Some patients are candidates for:
- Clear aligners – These plastic trays fit over your teeth. As you switch to new sets of trays on a specific treatment schedule, the aligners will gently shift your teeth into new positions. The trays are completely removable, so that you’re able to eat, brush, and floss as usual. You need to wear them a certain number of hours each day in order to stay on the right track. If your malocclusion is mild to moderate, you could be suited for aligners. But if your jaws require more advanced repositioning, they won’t accomplish adequate straightening for a healthy bite.
- Ceramic brackets – These braces function just like metal braces, but they look a little different. The brackets are ceramic-colored and matched to the shade of your enamel. Then, wires are held in place with clear o-rings. Your braces will be far less noticeable than traditional orthodontics, but accomplish the same straightening. Many patients who need braces are candidates for ceramic brackets – just schedule a consultation to have x-rays taken and learn whether they’re right for you.
