What to Bring to Your First Orthodontist Appointment

Young man at orthodontic appointment

Your first orthodontist appointment can feel anywhere from exciting to nerve-wracking – and that’s fine! While it’s normal to have a bit of pre-appointment jitters, being prepared can ease your mind and set you up for a better visit.

Let’s help you be as prepared as possible.

Why Prepare for Your First Visit?

First-time orthodontic appointments are about more than just an introduction and choosing the right fit. They’re an opportunity for us to assess your current dental health and create the best treatment plan for your individual needs. Bringing the right materials helps us to provide accurate recommendations.

In addition, preparation also helps cut down on stress. Knowing you’ve handled the necessary paperwork and brought along everything the office might ask for means you can focus entirely on your consultation and understanding your treatment options.

What to Bring to Your First Orthodontist Appointment

To make your visit as seamless as possible, pack the following items before heading to your orthodontist’s office.

Recent Dental Records and X-Rays

At your first visit, we will ask for a detailed understanding of your dental health history, and recent dental records are a great starting point. These documents help us assess the position of your teeth, existing dental work, and any potential issues that might influence your treatment.

If your general dentist recently performed an X-ray, request a copy to bring along. Many orthodontists require X-rays as part of their consultation, and having them on hand can save time and prevent the need for repeat imaging.

If you’re not sure, ask your orthodontist’s office ahead of time what you should request from your dentist. And call your current dentist ahead of time to inquire about transferring your records to the orthodontist’s office prior to your visit, if possible.

Your Insurance Card and ID

If you plan to use dental insurance to cover part of your orthodontic treatment costs, make sure to bring your insurance card. This information will help the front desk staff verify your coverage and provide you with accurate estimates of out-of-pocket expenses. Even if you’re unsure about what your insurance covers, bring the card anyway. We are happy to look into your benefits on your behalf.

Additionally, having a government-issued ID, like a driver’s license or a parent’s ID if the patient is a minor, may be necessary to fill out registration forms or enter official records into the system.

HSA or FSA Card

Did you know you may be able to use a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) to contribute toward orthodontic care? Orthodontic treatments often qualify as eligible expenses.

If you plan to take advantage of this perk, make sure you have your card with you. Pro Tip: If you’re unclear about what your HSA or FSA covers, reach out to your benefits provider before your appointment.

A Referral (if Required)

Depending on the details of your dental insurance plan, a referral from your general dentist might be necessary for the orthodontist to provide services covered under your benefits. Check with your insurance provider before your appointment to confirm whether a referral is required.

If required, ask your general dentist to provide the referral ahead of time, which can usually be emailed or faxed directly to the orthodontist for convenience.

A List of Questions

Whether you’re curious about treatment timelines, options for braces versus aligners, or payment plans, this appointment is the time to ask them! Be sure to write your questions down in advance so you don’t forget. Simply starting a note on your phone is one easy option to keep track of your questions as you think of them before your appointment.

Complete Any Online Paperwork

Many orthodontic offices provide online forms that new patients can fill out before arriving at the office. Completing these ahead of time reduces wait times and allows the staff to focus fully on your care once you arrive. If you’re unsure whether online paperwork is needed, give the office a quick call to confirm.

Headphones or Entertainment

While you may not need these for your first appointment, as it will likely be an initial consultation, consider bringing some music or podcasts to listen to for those longer sessions.

Many orthodontic offices have TVs, music, or other entertainment options, but it’s always good to bring your personal preferences, especially during more lengthy visits like braces placement.
