Are There Cons to Clear Aligners?

Close up of clear aligners.

Clear aligners are an often asked-for alternative to traditional metal braces. And why not? They are nearly impossible to notice and you can remove them to eat and drink, so no foods are off-limits.

With so many benefits, it might seem like aligners are the best solution for everyone. The truth is, while they are an excellent option for many orthodontic patients, each case requires careful consideration of both the pros and cons of treatment and aligners are no exception.

How Clear Aligners Work

Clear aligners are custom-made, removable trays designed to gradually shift your teeth into the desired position, providing a straighter, healthier smile. As we mentioned, they are virtually invisible when worn and completely removable.

Each set of aligners is worn for about two weeks before progressing to the next. The aligners apply gentle, consistent pressure to your teeth, gradually moving them into the prescribed position. This process continues until your teeth reach their final, desired alignment, at which point retainer aligners are typically worn for a designated period each day to maintain your new smile.

Potential Drawbacks of Clear Aligners

While clear aligners offer many benefits, there are some potential cons to consider before choosing this treatment option.

Limited Effectiveness for Severe Cases

Clear aligners are highly effective for treating mild to moderate orthodontic issues, such as minor crowding, spacing, and bite problems. Luckily, this encompasses a large percentage of cases, and aligners have come a long way, treating more advanced cases as they are improved.

However, aligners may not be suitable for very complex cases, such as misalignments that require significant tooth movement or major bite issues. In these instances, traditional metal or other orthodontic appliances may be more appropriate.

Compliance and Responsibility

One of the main advantages of clear aligners is that they are removable, allowing you to eat, brush, and floss without your braces being in the way.

However, the fact that they are removable also requires a high level of patient responsibility. For the best results, you must wear your aligners for at least 22 hours per day, only removing them for eating, drinking, and oral hygiene.

Since failure to wear your aligners as prescribed can prolong treatment time and compromise the quality of your results, they should only be considered when the wearer is committed and responsible enough to follow through with the treatment plan.

Cost Considerations

While the cost of clear aligners and braces varies depending on the complexity of your case and the duration of your treatment, aligners can sometimes be more expensive than traditional metal braces.

Some dental insurance plans may cover a portion of the cost, so check with your provider to understand your specific coverage for each option. Additionally, be sure to factor in any additional expenses, such as replacement aligners or retainers, which may be necessary throughout your treatment.

Frequent Cleaning and Maintenance

To maintain the clarity and cleanliness of your aligners, you will have to clean them regularly. This involves following daily cleaning and care instructions from your orthodontist as well as rinsing them thoroughly with lukewarm water each time you remove them. This is in addition to your regular oral hygiene practice, plus brushing your teeth before reinserting the aligners to prevent food particles and bacteria from trapping against your teeth.

Possible Speech Adjustments

When you first start wearing clear aligners, you may experience a slight lisp or difficulty speaking clearly. This is because your tongue needs time to adjust to the presence of the aligners in your mouth. While most people adapt quickly, usually within a few days to a week, it’s important to be aware of this potential temporary side effect.
